Qualifications in brief:

Tim Reed

Personalised coaching positions Currently at capacity. Wait list available.

While studying to become PDHPE teacher Tim became fascinated by exercise physiology and endurance sports. Tim decided early on he was more interested in endurance sports coaching than becoming a teacher and so knuckled down on learning as much as he could about training for endurance sports while casually dipping his toe into triathlon to gain a very thorough understanding of what an athlete experiences as there is a limit to what a coach can learn form a text book.

This toe dipping transformed into a total belly flop immersion as Tim worked his way through the age group ranks and then turned professional at the relatively late age of 25. From there, Tim established himself as one of the more consistent performers on the world long course triathlon circuit collecting over 90 professional podium finishes, an Ironman Australia victory and multiple Australian and Asia Pacific titles. The highlight of his professional career collecting a World Championship title at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2016. Unlike many pros who start coaching as their career earnings drop and they search for alternative revenue, Coaching has always been a part of Tim’s day to day life because he genuinely gets immense joy out of helping others achieve their athletic goals and through the continual pursuit of perpetual learning. Tim has learnt not just through the many athletes he’s coached and the success he’s achieved as an athlete but also from the many mistakes he’s made along the way. We’ve made most of the mistakes so you don’t have to!

Liz Blatchford

2 Positions Available From 10/5/23

Liz has the longest history in the sport of all the RPG coaches having been involved in triathlons since the age of 13.

Liz’s eighteen year professional career included twelve years on the ITU / World Triathlon circuit achieving multiple World Cup victories and podiums. During her short course career, Liz represented both Australia and Great Britain in the Commonwealth Games and in over 10 elite World Championships.

For the final six years of Liz’s racing career Liz switched to long course racing with just as much success quickly establishing herself as one of the best in the world.

Liz won on debut at both the 70.3 and Ironman distance, and went on to finish 3rd in Kona in her rookie year. Liz accumulated numerous Ironman and 70.3 wins and podiums from 2012-2018 with the highlights being three times back to back Ironman Cairns titles and two podiums in Kona (2013, 2015).

Liz began coaching in 2014 and since now retiring from the race course, gets her race thrills from helping her athletes achieve their goals (and beyond)

Steve ‘Lizard’ McKenna

Personalised coaching positions currently at capacity. Wait list available.

Steve McKenna has been passionate about and heavily involved in endurance sports for 18 years. From running at a national level since he was 12yo to taking up triathlon in 2015 after retiring from drinking too many beers between 2009 and 2014.   Steve has had the terrific combination of an innate curiosity along with experienced mentors throughout his triathlon career Steve has trained under Matty White (highly experienced Professional long course triathlete), before moving across to the Australian ITU Head Coach based in Wollongong and Canberra (Australian Institute of Sport) throughout 2018. In 2019 the RPG Head Coach (Tim Reed) begun guiding Steve and it was no coincidence that Steve‘s results as an athlete improved out of sight since teaming up. Steve has learned from each coach while also now having several years of practical coaching experience behind him to understand that two athletes are the same and to get the most out of each athlete takes an individualised approach.

Steve is limiting his coaching  numbers to make sure he can still continue his progression and goals of becoming one of the best in the sport but for the limited few that are under the McKenna wing they will a truly receive a one on one coaching service alongside additional support from Reedy and Clint.

Dr Sam Tebeck

Coaching Positions Available

Sam is an accredited sport and exercise scientist with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA). He is heavily nested in the field of sport science, having finished his Doctor of Philosophy whilst based within Australian High Performance Sport. Sam’s research focused on the physiological adaptations following heat training in cyclists, with a broader focus on how to optimise training adaptation to increase performance on race day. During this time, he provided sport science services to Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalists across multiple sports, including swimming, cycling and athletics. In addition to his practical experience, Sam has recently been providing sport science lecturing at The University of South Australia. It is the combination of both knowledge and practical application of scientific theory, that Sam uses to inform his coaching philosophy, making him a highly effective coach.

From an athletic perspective, Sam has competed within endurance sport for the past 10 years, with 5 of these years as a professional triathlete. While he no longer competes professionally, you may still see his name pop up on a marathon result list as he endeavours to beat the 2:30 barrier!

Kyle Buckingham

Kyle Buckingham is a professional triathlete from South Africa now living in the USA . He has been in the sport of triathlon for the past 13 years.  He took up triathlon at the late age of 25, when he was living and working in London as an Electrician. Kyle’s love for triathlon was strong even though he had no experience in swimming, cycling & running and competed in his first triathlon at Ironman South Africa in 2009 as an amateur. He grew strongly each year while still working in London with a full time manual labor job and placed into the top & podium positions in his age category in every race he did. From a coaching perspective these formative years training around work gave Kyle a unique understanding of the challenges amateur athletes face that many professional triathletes and even coaches don’t understand.

In 2013 Kyle had a break through year as an amateur winning every amateur race he competed in, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, in a time of 8:37hr and placing 16th overall amongst the best professionals in the world.

Kyle turned professional in 2014 and won his first race at Ironman Lake Placid. Since then Kyle has won 4 Ironman races and competed in Kona 9 times, including as an amateur and been on the top of many podiums as well.

Reedy and Kyle first met racing each other in the Philippines and over many discussions around all things coaching realised that they shared a similar philosophy that the science and training knowledge, while crucial to excellent coaching is only really effective if the the coach can really get to know their athlete, understand their situation and personality to utilise the hard to find  ‘human element’ of coaching to motivate them each client to implement all of the coach’s training expertise.

Kyle shares the RPG philosophy of quality over quantity when it comes to his coaching style and we are excited to bring Kyle’s passion for helping athletes to achieve their potential to RPG.
